JAPANESE ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS ( JAUPES )
< Objectives >
The aim of the Association is to contribute to the development of
university education by conducting investigation and research relating to
physical education (which, in this pamphlet is taken to include health
education and sports), supporting faculty development, and evaluating and
commending activity in the field of physical education among our members.
< History >
The Council for University Physical Education and Sports (the
predecessor of the Japanese Association of University Physical Education
and Sports) was founded in 1952 to establish a program of research into
physical education in university education and a structure for
communication and cooperation between universities. This happened at a
time when universities were being reorganized under the new educational
system, which began in 1949 as a result of the educational reforms.
- In 1962, the name was modified to the Japanese Council for University
Health and Physical Education.
- In 1971, an organizing committee was formed to set up the Japanese
Association for University Physical Education and Sports.
- On October 4, 1973, the Japanese Association of University Physical

< Investigation and research >
- 1. The findings of the Physical Fitness Test
- A report on the findings of the physical strength test has been
published every two to three years since the first issue was published in
1977. This work has been a central part of our physical strength
investigation program.
This report, which is related to our investigation into the physical
strength test, is our primary activity and has been published
continuously for a quarter of a century.
- 2. Reporting on University Physical Education
- Along with the changes in university establishment standards in 1991,
we started in 1955 to conduct a survey of reforms and of the state of the
curriculum in the form of a questionnaire given to people who have been
university members. We have been carrying out this project every year
and giving a report on the feedback obtained to university members every
two years. In specific terms, we investigate the way in which the syllabus
is presented, the form and role of classes (if they are required for
graduation), the contents of lectures, seminars and practical exercises,
course evaluations and the state of curriculum reform in the areas of
health and physical education.
< Journal >
Since the fiscal year 2004, we have published “ Japan Journal for Health,
Physical Education, Recreation, Sports and Dance in Universities” every
year for the purpose of improving the quality of practical education and
research. Journal articles will be published after being accepted by referees
who are members of a specialist committee.
< Publicity and Publications >
The Association’s bulletin was originally named “ Physical Education,
Sports and Recreation” was first published on December 1, 1974, by the
Japanese Association of University Physical Education and Sports. It is
published three times a year and is useful for members as a source of
information and as a place to exchange information. After No.15 was
published in March, 1982, the name was changed and from No.16, published
in July, 1982, it has been named “The University Physical Education and
Sports”. Since then, this bulletin has taken on the role of a forum for
communication for members of the Association. This bulletin has been sent
free of charge to member organizations and to personal members since the
foundation of the Association. It includes the latest information about
research papers, reports of overseas inspections, the activities of the central
and branch offices, minutes of the meetings held at the central office, and
research reports, etc.
< Website >
Following the Japanese government’s decision on “the disclosure of
information relating to nonprofit organizations by using the Internet” in
August, 2001, we have been updating the budget and the accounts statement
on our website every fiscal year since January, 2002. The purpose of setting
up the website is to report on our activities, not only to the university but
also for the benefit of society as a whole, and provide information to members,
as well as to spread information about mutual activities among members.
The website covers:
- The activities of the central office
- Information about workshops and seminars
- Advertisements for teaching staff
- Public appeals for grants
< Newsletters by e-mail >
We distribute information about seminars and conferences, etc., via
< International exchange >
We are members of the International Council for Health, Physical
Education, Recreation ? Sport and Dance (ICHPER-SD) and the
International Council for Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE ).
< Grant program to support university physical education and sports-related
workshops >
Since the year 2000, we have implemented a grant program to support
workshops (including study groups) held by affiliated organizations of
university sports and physical education of whose commitment to faculty
development we have approved.
< Organizing workshops and seminars >
The central and branch offices of the Association hold a total of
approximately 20 seminars a year. The content of these seminars includes
distinguishing features of the field, recent research and teaching
development, and each seminar is explained lucidly by first-rate instructors.
In recent years, we have broadened our scope by opening our seminars to
other graduate students, not only to incumbent teachers, in order to promote
a new generation of trainees.
< Research grant program >
Since its establishment in 1995, the research grant program has served to
promote educational research in university sports and physical education.
Recipients of this grant system must be engaged in practical research
contributing to the progress, development, broadening and improvement of
physical education at university level, with a special emphasis on fresh and
innovative ideas by university members (including individual university
teachers) and personal members of the Association.
< Public commendation >
Since 1997, we have established a system of public commendation
through the university sports and physical education prize and the
university sports and physical education honorable mention, in order to
promote the development and effectiveness of the universities’ physical
education program. In principle, to be nominated for the educational prize or
for honorable mention, research material has to have been published, within
the previous year (January 1 to December 31), in book form or in a journal
related to university sports and physical education or other journal of
equivalent standing.
< The advanced award for faculty development in the field of university
sports and physical education >
